Start with placement

Place the main light in front of you, slightly above eye level, and a little off-center. If the light sits below the webcam, it can create harsh shadows and an unnatural look.

Improve the background too

Lighting only your face can make the room behind you look dark. A small background lamp or reflected wall light can make the whole image calmer without adding clutter to the desk.

Quick checklist

  • Avoid sitting with a bright window behind you.
  • Use dimming instead of always running lights at maximum brightness.
  • Move the light until glasses and screens stop reflecting it.
  • Choose a compact clamp or clip if desk depth is limited.
