Start with placement
Place the main light in front of you, slightly above eye level, and a little off-center. If the light sits below the webcam, it can create harsh shadows and an unnatural look.
| Setup | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Clip-on monitor light | Tiny desks and laptop users | Glare on glasses or glossy screens |
| Small ring light | Quick call improvements | Flat reflections in glasses |
| Desk lamp with diffuser | Dual use for calls and reading | Needs careful angle control |
| Window plus fill light | Daytime work | Changing light through the day |
Improve the background too
Lighting only your face can make the room behind you look dark. A small background lamp or reflected wall light can make the whole image calmer without adding clutter to the desk.
Quick checklist
- Avoid sitting with a bright window behind you.
- Use dimming instead of always running lights at maximum brightness.
- Move the light until glasses and screens stop reflecting it.
- Choose a compact clamp or clip if desk depth is limited.
