Measure before buying
Most problems come from skipping measurements. Check the length and height of your power strip, the thickness of your desktop, and the amount of room behind the front edge of the desk.
| Tray type | Best for | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Screw-mounted metal tray | Permanent setups and heavy power strips | Requires drilling into the desktop |
| Clamp-on tray | Renters and temporary desks | May not fit thick or unusual desk edges |
| Adhesive raceway | Light cables and small chargers | Not ideal for bulky adapters |
| Fabric cable hammock | Wide desks and flexible routing | Can sag if overloaded |
Fit the power strip first
If the tray is too shallow for a power strip with large adapters, it will look tidy in photos but fail in daily use. Leave room for plugs to bend naturally.
Installation checklist
- Confirm desktop thickness and underside clearance.
- Place the tray where knees and chair arms will not hit it.
- Keep the power strip switch reachable.
- Use separate clips for cables that need to leave the tray.
- Test standing desk height movement before final tightening.
